Few words inspire more fear in the minds of Florida homeowners than “termite.” Voracious wood-eaters that can destroy the structural integrity of your home seemingly overnight, termites thrive in Florida’s hot, humid climate and may not be detected until significant damage has been done.
Homes built since chlordane was banned are particularly susceptible to termite damage. Homeowners generally have two choices for preventing termite damage: baits like Sentricon or new-generation termiticides including Termidor.
Termidor is a non-repellant insecticide that mimics the effective action of chlordane with less toxicity. Termites don’t recognize the barrier and move through it, then carry the material back to their nests where the entire colony is killed.
Sentricon is a bait station designed to detect termites before they find a way into your home. Its primary drawback is that it isn’t necessarily more attractive than your home. If the termites find an entrance to your home before they discover the bait, they can easily move in.
Our personal preference is for Termidor but we offer both options to our customers with a comprehensive written warranty that covers the cost of any wood damaged in homes under contract for termite control.
There’s an old saying in Florida: either a house already has termites or it’s going to get them. Even if you don’t see signs of termites, a thorough annual inspection of your home by a highly trained professional can help to prevent damage before it becomes apparent.
